The 2025 Lumsden Cup: Entries Now Open

The Golf Club of Dublin is delighted to announce that entries are now officially open for the 91st staging of the John Lumsden Memorial Cup, which will take place on Sunday, 3rd August 2025, over the historic links at Dollymount.

This 36-hole strokeplay event is open to golfers with a handicap index of 9.0 and under, affiliated with golf clubs in the province of Leinster. Players can register online at: golfgenius.com

A €75 entry fee includes lunch between rounds. The field is limited to 81 players, with the lowest handicaps accepted first (the cutoff in 2024 was 3.7). No fees will be charged until entries close and are confirmed. The deadline for entry is Thursday, 25th July, with tee times published by Monday, 28th July.

Lumsden Cup History

First contested in 1926, the Lumsden Cup was established to honour John Lumsden, a pioneering figure in Irish golf. A founding member of The Golf Club of Dublin and former Vice President of the Golfing Union of Ireland, Lumsden was instrumental in the early development of the game. He famously laid out Ireland’s first 18-hole course in the Phoenix Park in 1885 and hosted the country’s first inter-club match later that year.

The competition, presented by Lumsden’s sons, Sir John and Hugh Lumsden, continues to celebrate this heritage. Once rotated between various Leinster venues, it now has a permanent home at the Golf Club of Dublin, where it is run by the Club’s Tournament Committee.

The Lumsden Cup is steeped in history and has seen victory by some of Ireland’s most accomplished amateurs:

• Tom Craddock (Malahide) – 1980 winner, Walker Cup player
• Roger Greene (Clontarf) – 1933 champion and International
• Con Harnett (Hermitage) – Beat Joe Carr in the 1951 final
• G.H. Owens (Skerries) – 1934 winner and GUI President
• J.F. McLoughlin (Golf Club of Dublin) – 1929 winner and West of Ireland Champion

In 2024, the title was claimed by Mark Cadden of Roganstown Golf Club, holding the trophy in the Christy O’Connor Room. Mark Cadden received the trophy from Captain Dec Nolan.
